Gold Coast Airport Marathon

More than 23,000 people of all ages and abilities will take part in the annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon on Sunday the 1st of July.

The event offers a marathon, half marathon, 10km run, 5km challenge, Junior dash races over 4km and a 2.25km for the kids.

The course runs alongside the Pacific Ocean beaches and broadwater providing the ideal setting for participants.

Enter an event or by one of the thousands of spectators who are expected to cheer on the runners with roving musicians and entertainers around the course creating an amazing atmosphere called ‘Runspiration’

Dreamworld’s Tiger Island handlers welcomed an early Easter surprise last week with the arrival of two, four week old, male Bengal tiger cubs who join the park’s renowned tiger program.

The pair were admired by hundreds of doting park guests throughout the day as they pounced, napped and enjoyed bottles of warm milk in the Tiger Island cub display.

The two bundles of bounce currently weigh just five kilograms each, but as they enjoy a healthy diet and exercise program at Dreamworld these tiny ‘big cats’ will potentially weigh in excess of 200 kilograms once fully grown.

Considered one of the world’s leading tiger exhibits, Dreamworld’s Tiger Island is more than 1,600 square metres in size and features a 13 square metre pool, in which tigers swim throughout the day. The cats also enjoy a range of enrichment experiences from off-exhibit hideaways, guest experiences such as tiger walks, feeds and photos and new exhibit, The Lair.

Dreamworld visitors enjoy uninterrupted views of the tigers and handlers playing together from across the Tiger Island moat and the chance to walk alongside them at The Lair, the park’s new exotic animal exhibit.

With the addition of the two cubs, Dreamworld is now home to 15 tigers, including nine Bengal and six Sumatran tigers. The park also houses two cougars.

The Bengal cubs will be on full public display in Dreamworld’s tiger cub enclosure from Wednesday 4 April onwards and it is hoped they will begin guest encounters in the coming weeks.

The 2012 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships start today going through to the 1st April 2012 at Queensland's iconic Kurrawa Beach. The Aussies will bring together surf life saving clubs and members from across the country, with athletes of all ages contesting over 300 exhilarating surf lifesaving events, in what will be an action-packed week of competition.

The Aussies is the largest sporting event of its type in the world, with entries open to all Surf Life Saving members. It is a celebration of the Surf Life Saving movement and an opportunity for surf lifesavers from around Australia to display their talents.

Beach and Water Safety

Our Gold Coast beaches are world-class with kilometer’s of golden sand and fantastic swimming and surfing opportunities. But if your planning on spending some beach time on your next Gold Coast holiday it’s important to be aware of some water safety basics. (beach safety tips provided by the Gold Coast city council website)

NEVER:
Swim alone or surf at beaches not patrolled by Lifeguards or Lifesavers
Bathe outside the red and yellow flags that mark safe swimming areas
Bathe directly after a meal or under the influence of alcohol
Bathe when the beach is closed. (Observe the sign "Danger- Reserve closed to bathing" and the red flag)
Bathe when there are no safety flags
Panic if caught in a current or undertow, but raise one arm straight up and float until help arrives
Struggle if seized with a cramp, but raise one arm for help, float and keep the affected part of the body still
Go out far when a yellow flag is flying- it means the surf is dangerous
Bathe if unsure of safe conditions, but seek advice of the nearest Lifeguard
Struggle against a rip or current, but swim diagonally across it.

ALWAYS:
Swim between the red & yellow flag on patrolled beaches
Read the Flags and Safety Signs and understand what they mean before entering the water.

And, don’t forget to ‘Slip-Slop-Slap’ and drink plenty of water on those hot summer days!

In November Australian Outback Spectacular ‘Heroes of the Light Horse’ closed its doors for the final time to make way for an exciting new show - launching December 6, 2011!

The third chapter in the Australian Outback Spectacular story will be titled ‘Spirit of the Horse’ and will celebrate the courageous spirit of the Australian horse and honor the legend that is Phar Lap.

Australian Outback Spectacular first opened in 2006, with the second show ‘Heroes of the Light Horse’ launching in September 2009 and proving a huge success. Australian Outback Spectacular has entertained millions of visitors from all over the world.

Surfers Paradise will exclusively host the exhibition’s first ever visit to Australia, following its triumphs in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Premier Anna Bligh welcomed news of the announcement: “This award winning TV series has been watched in homes all over Queensland for years and now the experience is being brought to life right here on the Gold Coast."

The interactive exhibition is based on the multi award winning and long running hit television crime drama series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. CSI: The Experience exhibition invites visitors to assume the role of a forensic detective to solve cases using scientific principles and techniques currently in use today and as seen on the CSI television programs.

Designed for visitors 11 years of age and older, the 1,110 square-metre exhibition was developed in consultation with 175 forensic science experts and guides visitors through an intriguing process that closely copies the realities of crime scene investigation.

CSI: The Experience will open exclusively at Piazza Surfers Paradise on Friday 2nd December 2011.

IronMan & IronWoman Series

The Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Surf Ironman Series and the Ironwoman Series feature the country’s best Surf Life Saving athletes competing in the most grueling ocean based competition on the planet. 

The 2011/12 series is fought out over six rounds at iconic Australian beaches, kicking off at Surfers Paradise. Both the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman Series and the Ironwoman Series will feature 20 athletes each.

Round 1: Sunday 18 Dec. 2011 Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, QLD Local Start Time (TBC): IronWomen (11:15am-12:30pm), IronMen (1:30-3:30pm) 

Enduro: 90-Minute Race is a continuous event which consists of the ski / swim / board with 500m runs in between each leg. Women will do approximately half of this in duration.

Gold Coast set to shine with 2018 Commonwealth Games

The Gold Coast has taken its place among the great Australian Cities after winning the 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid in St Kitts & Nevis said Queensland Premier Anna Bligh recently.

Ms Bligh said the Games could generate up to $2 billion in economic benefit with up to 30,000 full time-equivalent jobs created between 2015 and 2020.

Over $500 million will now be invested on sport and transport infrastructure as a direct result of the successful bid.
"Congratulations to the Gold Coast, to Queensland and Australia - we did it. We get up again!" said Ms Bligh.

"In 2018 we will be ready to host a unique world- class and friendly event that builds on the Commonwealth brand and enhances our city's reputation.

"This city will be transformed with new infrastructure and a buzz that only a big international event like this can bring."

"Today we hit the bullseye - 2018 is the Gold Coast's time to shine!" said the Premier.

THE Gold Coast has won a hard fought battle with Hambantota to host the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

The final vote was 43-27 in the Gold Coast's favouras lobbying and presentations continued right up to the vote.

The Commonwealth Games is predicted to deliver $2 billion in economic benefits to the Gold Coast and about 30,000 jobs in the next seven years.

Gold Coast to host IRB Sevens Rugby

The Gold Coast will be the new host for the Australian leg of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series for the next four years.

The IRB and Australian Rugby Union (ARU) made the announcement on Wednesday, with the Queensland holiday strip set to launch the 2011/12 series in November.

The Gold Coast was selected ahead of bids from Perth, Sydney and Adelaide, which hosted the tournament for the last five years.

"The Gold Coast is known around the world as a city of excitement and fun and that is exactly the atmosphere we want to permeate through to the Sevens tournament," ARU chief executive John O'Neill said in statement.

"We know tournaments like Dubai, Hong Kong and Wellington all put on a show that attracts people from around the world and we are confident that the decision to host this tournament on the Gold Coast will deliver another exciting opportunity for fans to enjoy international Sevens."

The Sevens World Series will kick off at Skilled Stadium in Robina on 25-26 November.

Broadbeach Bars, Clubs and Nightlife

Broadbeach, with its growing concentration of upmarket bars, clubs and restaurants, has more recently become the location of choice for a more laid-back nightlife experience. Much like Surfers, all of the venues are within walking distance of one another and there's the added bonus of Conrad Jupiters Casino just over the highway.

Stylish lounge bars, surf clubs and alfresco restaurants dominate the social scene on the Coast, where a warm climate and outdoor lifestyle override the pub culture found in other Australian cities. Surf clubs perched on prime beachfront positions are the locals choice while the alfresco dining strips found in many seaside suburbs are ideal for people-watching over wine and tappas.

Starting at the beach end of town you've got Kurrawa Surf Club, a largely family-friendly haunt around dinner time but also a great place to meet mates for a few well-priced beers and a meal. Across the road, Liars Bar has a pub feel to it with pool tables and live music on weekends. Alto, at the top of Broadbeach Mall, is a sleek lounge bar and restaurant that attracts stylish cocktail-supping sorts, with live DJ and other entertainment.

Broadbeach Mall is also home to Platinum Nightclub (open 9pm till late Thursday-Saturday; cover charge applies) the self-declared 'party central in Broadbeach', a claim backed up by a decent history of big-name DJs - think Carl Cox, Fedde Le Grand, Bloc Party - as well as its lineup of resident DJs. Fronting Platinum on Broadbeach Mall is partner bar Lil Sister (open 10am till late Wednesday-Sunday) where cocktails and tapas are served up in an open lounge-setting that's perfect for groups.

Heading onto Surf Parade, the suburb's alfresco dining strip, there are several uber cool bars to pop into for a drink and inviting restaurants for a bite to eat. A good late-night option along Surf Parade is East (open Thursday-Sunday, from 6.30pm for dinner, nightclub around 10pm-5am; cover charge applies after 10pm), an Asian-inspired restaurant and nightclub. Entry to the club is via Main Place Laneway.

Still on Surf Parade, but away from the main dining and retail strip, is another small hub of bars and restaurants. Moo Moo Wine Bar and Grill never fails to attract a crowd while nearby Lauxes (that's sexual spelt backwards, to keep you in the loop) is an inviting option for a drink or dinner.

Walk across the highway or catch the monorail ($2) from Oasis Shopping Centre to Jupiters Casino to try your luck on the punt, sip a coctail at Atrium bar or take in a live band at the Prince Albert, Tuesday through to Saturday nights.

Surfers Paradise to Coolangatta

THE Coolangatta Gold is one of the most gruelling physical events on the planet and it is now run annually on the beaches of the Gold Coast.
Each year the event continues to grow in popularity - a record 500 competitors took part in individual and team events from Australia, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand, France, Britain and the US contested the Coolangatta Gold in 2009.
The men's race begins with a 23km surf ski leg from Surfers Paradise to Greenmount before the return north that includes a beach run of 0.65km from Greenmount to Coolangatta; a 3.5km surf swim to Bilinga; a 4km beach run to Currumbin and a 5.5km board paddle to Burleigh Heads before the final torturous 10km beach run Burleigh Heads to Surfers Paradise.
The team race follows the same course with each team made up of a ski paddler, runner, swimmer and board paddler.
The women's event is over a shortened course, beginning with a 10km surf ski leg from Greenmount to Currumbin followed by a 5.5km board paddle to Burleigh Heads, a 2.50km surf swim to Miami before the final 7.5km run back to Surfers Paradise for a total distance of 25.5km. Although, there is a push from the female athletes themselves to lengthen this course.
The Junior Coolangatta Gold, run in Surfers Paradise, is 2km and is open to U14, U15 and U17 age categories.
Surf Life Saving Australia's surf sports general manager Grant Baldock aptly describes the event as two races: ``There are those who race to win and there are those who race to finish. We are seeing growth in both areas.''
The winning male takes home $20,000 in prizemoney and the female winner $10,000.
Around 2000 spectators packed Surfers Paradise beach to catch the start and finish while thousands more lined the 23km stretch from Greenmount to cheer on competitors.

Baby humpback whale Gold Coast August 9 2011

RESCUERS are hopeful a baby humpback whale stranded on the Gold Coast yesterday has been reunited with its mother.
Director of marine sciences at Sea World, Trevor Long, says a mother humpback and her calf have been spotted near where the week-old whale was released yesterday.
"We've got a mother and calf in the same location where we released the calf yesterday afternoon," he told ABC Radio today.
"We haven't been able to make any direct comparisons at this point in time but we're trying to get some photos just to see if that is the situation."
Photos of the baby whale will be compared with images from yesterday's stranded calf on a computer, he said.
Rescuers are hopeful it is the same whale.
"We haven't been able to find a single calf by itself," Mr Long said.

The baby whale was returned to the ocean in a marathon rescue operation after it became stranded on Surfers Paradise beach about 1am (AEST) yesterday.

Australian Surf Life Saving Championships Kurrawa Beach

The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships will take place at Kurrawa Beach on Queensland's Gold Coast from 26 March - 1 April 2012, it was announced yesterday.

The Aussies, as it is more commonly known, is the largest sporting event of its type in the world, with entries open to all Surf Life Saving members. It is a celebration of the Surf Life Saving movement; a chance for surf lifesavers from around Australia to display their talents.

Athletes of all ages will converge on Kurrawa Beach to contest over 300 exhilarating medal events, in what will be an action-packed week of competition.

The Aussies is supported by the Queensland Government through Events Queensland.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is one of the biggest events on the region's calendar, attracting almost 25,000 competitors.

Run July 2-3 along the city's beautiful Broadwater foreshore precinct, the marathon must rank as one of Australia's most scenic sporting events.

The flat terrain and mild winter temperatures make it a runner's favourite.

The 42.195km race takes in the city's stunning coastline, starting at the Southport Broadwater Parklands and venturing to a southern turnaround at Burleigh Heads.

The race attracts runners of varying ability and motivation - crutches, wheelchairs, fancy dress, family groups, in peak shape and out-of-shape can all be seen.

What do Jon Stevens, Katie Noonan, Vince Jones, Phil Emmanuel, Chain and Kevin Borich all have in common? They are all performing at one of the many Broadbeach events and festivals this year.

In 2011 events in Broadbeach are promised to tantalize your ears and your taste buds giving audiences the chance to sing, dance and eat their way through the cool winter months.

This year’s program will have something for everyone and is hoped to give local businesses a much needed financial boost, in a traditionally quiet time of the year for tourism.

More than 130,000 people are expected to visit Broadbeach, specifically to attend one of the four events on offer between May and August.

The massive line-up of events will begin on the last weekend of May with the much anticipated tenth anniversary of the Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival.

Celebrations will run over four massive days and nights giving audiences the chance to witness more than 200 performers on outdoor stages and venues throughout the area.

Headlining this year’s event will be acts like Chain, Jon Stevens, Phil Emmanuel, Kevin Borich, the Bondi Cigars and international acts Hamilton Loomis and Austin “Walkin’ Cane”. The event remains free, and you can enjoy the festivities without even requiring a ticket, all ages are welcome.

The following month Broadbeach Alliance will present, ‘Broadbeach Opera in the Park’ on Saturday the 25th of June in Kurrawa Park from 6pm. Organisers will welcome internationally acclaimed performers Donald Cant and Danielle Everett for the event, both best known for their tours with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Phantom of the Opera’.

July will see the return of ‘Broadbeach Restaurant Week,’ which will run from the 15th to the 24th. This event will be in its 3rd year in 2011 and has become so popular for offering up 3 course $35 or $55 meals at some of the Coast’s best restaurants that organizers are working towards getting menus out to the public within the next month, to give people the chance to book early.

The winter events season will conclude on a very high note with the Broadbeach Jazz Festival. Broadbeach Alliance is proud to announce that the headliners for this free event will Australian legends of the Jazz scene Vince Jones and Katie Noonan.

Broadbeach Alliance CEO Jan McCormick believes this year’s line-up of events is the best yet and gives everyone a reason to visit Broadbeach.
